Do I have to insure my babysitter, nanny or childminder against accidents?

Accident insurance for domestic staff - including babysitters, nannies and childminders - is compulsory in Switzerland. This is because it protects you against the financial consequences of an accident if something happens to the employed childminder during working hours or on the way to and from work.

The most important facts about accident insurance in brief:

  • The accident insurance is compulsory in Switzerland for any employment in the household.
  • It protects you against the financial consequences of any accidents at work suffered by your childminder.
  • The insurance costs CHF 100 per year, regardless of the provider.
  • It can be cancelled at any time upon termination of employment and
  • it is valid at the workplace and on the way to and from work.

Babysitters and nannies
If you employ a babysitter or nanny, you must take out accident insurance for them.

Childminder
As childminders usually work in their own home and are not employed by you directly, but by a childminder organisation, they do not need to take out accident insurance.

Self-employed babysitters and nannies
If your childminder is self-employed, you may not need to take out insurance. It is best to discuss together whether they are recognised as self-employed, which insurances are available and which you may still need to take out.
